Melati

ORANGUTAN

 Age: 24 years

 Height: About 4 feet

 Weight: 130 pounds

 Born: Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta

 In the wild: About 65,000 orangutans live in rain forests on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo. They are endangered because people cut down the trees and sell the babies as pets.

 Family: Mothers have a baby about every nine years and raise it to about age 9.

 Food: In the wild, leaves, fruits, nuts, bugs and bird eggs. At the zoo, vegetables, fruits, monkey food and oatmeal.

 Fun fact: Melati holds onto the top of her Indonesian Rain Forest exhibit and turns in a circle like a ballerina.
