It wasn't that long ago that Troy Slattery was building with Lincoln Logs rather than actual homes. However, since moving here in 2008 from Ohio, where he got his start in 2000 framing and building pole barns, his business, Slattery Builders, has been busy. Overall, he figures he's built 125 homes.
"I enjoy building people's homes, their dream homes," he said, "something they envision that they will enjoy, that will fit their family's needs, that they will grow into."
He has the designer's fascination with taking ideas and dreams and turning it into drawings and then reality. And two years ago, he added an architect to the company, Shane Giddens, a recent IPFW graduate.
"One thing I've learned is to really listen to what your client is telling you. You just can't go off of 'this is my idea, and everybody is going to love it.' You have to sketch it out and get everybody's feedback," he said.
His favorite moment is "seeing the final product, seeing it all done, clean. And there's when the homebuyer gets to walk through and they are excited about being able to move in."
In addition to his emphasis on listening to what his clients say they want in their new home, Slattery Builder supports its clients with a spacious showroom and an on-staff designer as they make all the decisions involved in finalizing a design and building a home. The typical client works with Slattery for three months on the design and then through the entire construction phase. Product quality, energy efficiency and design quality are all emphasized on the company website.
"I believe you've got to have a great product, a cost-effective product," he said. He watches the homebuilding business carefully but believes Slattery's own designs and quality are what make it stand out in the marketplace.
1. Why are you in this Parade of Homes and Lifestyle Show? No. 1, it is a great developer to team up with. North Eastern Group is one of the backbones of Fort Wayne. People know who they are. No. 2 is the location. It has great views and is close to activities, shopping, schools. It's right where I feel everybody would want to be. No. 3 is to really showcase our home, as far as what we can do with different styles and the different price points. It' a Parade home, but we are building it affordable so that everybody could enjoy it.
2. What is the biggest change you have seen in your career as a homebuilder? The style of homes. It has gone from traditional to Craftsman. We are getting great curb appeal and great interior finishes. Everybody is wanting to be in the kitchen as far as the gathering place. The kitchen is now a statement piece; it's not just a kitchen.
3. What is your stamp, what makes a house a Slattery Builders home? Our designs, our style, our Craftsman cottage. It's our floor plans and curb appeal. You can pick out our homes in a good way as you are driving through the areas. It's the way they are put together. Trends change, but we think we have a home that is going to keep its value. The flow pattern is still going to be a great family home.
