A devastating knee injury couldn't stop Lee Ann Reed from winning more city titles than any other tennis player.
Considering what happened, it's amazing how much Lee Ann Reed accomplished on a tennis court. Reed was 18 when she was involved in a car accident that crushed her right leg. At the time she had the potential to turn pro, but the injury knocked those dreams down.
As a player, Reed won nine women's city singles tournament titles, and played in 12 finals. Both are city records. In 1990, she became the first person to win titles in three different decades.
As a doubles player, Reed won 10 mixed doubles titles with six different partners and six doubles titles with six different partners. She never failed to win a city doubles tournament she entered. In 1972, 1973, 1979 and 1991, she won the singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles in the same year, and became the first player to win the triple crown more than once.
While playing at Concordia Lutheran High School, Reed won a state high school doubles title in 1972 and a state singles title in 1974. She also won the state Intercollegiate Singles Championship in 1975 at Valparaiso University.
For her playing accomplishments, Reed was inducted into the Fort Wayne Tennis Hall of Fame in 1989, and the Indiana Tennis Hall of Fame in 1993.
As a coach, Reed's high school teams at North Side, South Side and Bishop Dwenger won more than 200 matches. She became the first woman to coach a boys team in Fort Wayne.
Reed is the head professional at Wildwood Racquet Club where she has also been honored nationally for her coaching.
