Newspaper in Education (NIE) is an international program that helps promote and increase our children's literacy by using the newspaper as a teaching tool in the classroom. Fort Wayne Newspapers has been part of the Newspaper in Education (NIE) program for over 30 years!
This program is a partnership between local businesses, Fort Wayne Newspapers and local schools. Educators may use newspapers to teach a variety of subjects at all grade levels. These programs come in the form of supplemental newspapers, often referred to as a "tab". The tabs focus on educational topics such as literacy, geography, reading comprehension, career planning, health and more.
NIE is able to offer the newspaper to local teachers at no cost to them. These papers are provided as requested by local teachers in public, private, parochial and home school settings. The cost for these deliveries is covered by the Newspaper in Education program. Funding for this program is provided through an annual fundraising contest (Pet Star and the Baby contest alternate), sponsorships from local businesses, donations from newspaper readers and contests NIE conducts throughout the year. Those funds are used exclusively to provide newspapers to local classrooms, or as cash prizes for the contest.
Funds raised from this contest support the delivery of newspapers and help increase literacy by keeping kids informed and involved in their community. A newspaper is a living textbook. It's inexpensive, updated daily and delivered right to students' desks!
